Hikers in the North Eastern Turkish resort of Zigana were hit by an avalanche at 9:15am British time on Sunday 25th January. 17 members of a club based in Trabzon in a neighbouring Black Sea Province were swept 1600 feet down the slopes of Mount Zigana in the slide. Local rescue workers and military armed with sniffer dogs laboured throughout the afternoon in a rescue mission, but 10 of the hikers were found dead and two were sent to hospital, although five escaped unhurt. According to a report on Turk CNN TV, the cause of the slide was attributed to temperatures in the region being unusually higher than the seasonal average.
