A Metropolitan police officer has died following a ski accident at the French resort of Alpe D'Huez. The 43 year old had been skiing on a groomed run on-piste when he lost control of his skis and crashed off-piste down a steep 40metre drop. Despite swift efforts to revive him, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson from the French tourist office admitted: 'Serious accidents, especially fatalities, usually take place off-piste where conditions can be extremely dangerous. It is unusual to have a fatality on low pistes because they are usually extremely safe.' Conditions that day had been favourable, sunny and clear.
