British built resort Isola 2000 in the Alpes Maritime region of Southern France near the Italian border was founded by ex-British army officer Peter Boumphrey in the late 1960s. Last week, around 900 skiers and snowboarders were trapped in Isola's village by 3 separate avalanches, with snowdrifts of up to 25ft. The French police tried to open up the entrances (and exits) to the village road, but their work was hampered due to the threat of more avalanches. The resort was finally reopened on Sunday, but conditions were still precarious.
