The Peruvian Express chairlift at Snowbird resort, Utah, has only been open since November 2006, but yesterday 89 skiers and snowboarders were left stranded on it as it broke down for over two hours. 'The fixed grip on the top of the chair moved into the wheels at Tower 23 and blew off the track,' said Jared Ishkanian, a spokesperson for Snowbird. 'This is what triggered the automatic stop. We had a choice, to fix the chair with everyone sitting up there, or to get them down. We opted for the evac.' With gusts of up to 60mph, the majority of Snowbird was shut down before midday, but some hardier folk still chose to go out. Everyone was rescued safely, but there is still cause for concern as conditions are expected to get even breezier. Hold onto your hats.
