The Canadian Arctic Winter Games have been held every other year since 1970 with close to 2,000 athletes, coaches and cultural performers attending from various regions North of the 55th parallel. Grande Prairie, Alberta is the Southern-most city ever to host these biennial games, and the 2009 theme is 'Dream, Achieve Aspire.' The government of Canada has donated $400,000 to help with the organisation of the event. Participants are coming from all over include teams from Northern Alberta, Nunavik (Northern Quebec), Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Alaska, Greenland, the Russian region of Yamal, and the Sami (Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia). 21 Winter sports will be featured in the Arctic Winter Games including the usual suspects, alpine skiing and snowboarding but also dog mushing, speed skating, snowshoe biathalon and wrestling. The whole shebang kicked off on 6th March and is underway until March 13th. It's going to be fun!
