By Adrian Gourlay 5 Things You should Do When Visiting Banff

I have been in a very fortunate position over the last 5 winters having spent them living out in the mountains of Canada. My time has been split between the resorts of Banff in Alberta and Big White in British Columbia. Spending the majority of my time in Banff it has now become like a second home to me. I shall go on to talk about the 5 things that I think you should do if you are visiting Banff for the first time. So in no particular order here goes:

Sunshine Village (Delirium Dive)
The resort of Sunshine Village is a short 20 minute drive from the town of Banff. It offers some great terrain for all levels of experience and some spectacular views of the surrounding area. Delirium dive is an expert area of the mountain that can only be accessed if you are wearing an avalanche transceiver. Ski patrol regulate the area and on a good day you will find yourself riding some of the most challenging in bounds terrain in the rocky's. *Warning* Avalanche equipment must be carried at all times.

Banff Upper Hot Springs
A great way to rest your aching body after a hard day on the slopes. With Banff's spectacular scenery as the backdrop you can relax in water temperatures ranging from 37-40 degrees Celsius. Minerals found in the water include: Sulphate, Calcium, Bicarbonate, Magnesium & Sodium. The hot springs are located just a 5 minute drive out of the town centre.

Lake Louise Ski Resort & Chateau
Lake Louise is a large ski area and will take an hour to reach by car from the town of Banff. It offers some very diverse terrain including a good dose of challenging black runs in the back bowls. On a clear day this resort will take some beating, the views of the lake and chateau are truly breathtaking. Only a 5 minute drive from the ski resort The Fairmont Chateau can be found perched on the lake side offering hi quality 5* accommodation. During the winter months you can ice skate on the frozen lake and take a look at the many ice sculptures built in and around the hotel.

Saltlik Restaurant
Located in the town of Banff this is a great little dining experience. Downstairs you can enjoy a variety of cocktails in the well stocked and relaxed bar area whilst the main restaurant can be found up the stairs. With it's nice decor, friendly atmosphere, knowledgeable staff and legendary steak this place is a locals favourite. They have a wide selection of Alberta's finest on the menu as well as ribs, fish and pasta to keep everyone happy. My advice would be to check out the California cut, 'you can't go far wrong'.

Bars
Famed for it's lively nightlife it would be unfair of me not to give you a quick run down of some of the more popular watering holes to be found in Banff. Here in my opinion are 5 of the best:

Melissa's - Cheep drinks on Tuesday & Thursday and all the free popcorn you can shake a stick at.

The Pump & Tap - Small bar with a couple of pool tables. One of the only places to regularly catch the football.

The Elk & Oarsman - Locals bar with good beer and an even better food menu. Be sure to check out the steak sandwich and pizza's on selected nights.

The Devil's Gap - Lively bar popular with the seasonaires. Well priced drinks and a great atmosphere.

Hoodoo Lounge - Classed as a late night dancing venue you can always guarantee a lively night listening to some questionable music. Good if you're not ready to call it a day when the pubs are closing.
